Cricket Betting: Two Guntur Youth Try To End Life, One Dies

Two youth of Bellamkonda and Pedakurapadu mandals in Guntur district, who bet Rs 1 lakh on a cricket match, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide. While one of the youths, Suresh died while undergoing treatment, the condition of the other youth, Komuraiah, is critical.

The duo took a selfie-video before taking the extreme step. They said that they had paid Rs 30,000 to the betting organiser and that they still owe another Rs 80,000 to him, along with the interest.

It is learnt that the betting organiser mounted pressure on the youth for the Rs 80,000 and hence, the duo planned to die by suicide.

In the video, the youth bid farewell to their family members and said they were not angry over any body. The duo made it clear that they have lost hope on life and do not want to move ahead.

Police said that betting on ongoing IPL matches has been rampant for the last few days in Guntur district. Recently, Bhashyam Brahmaiah was killed by spraying some liquid on his face in Pedakurapadu mandal following dispute over betting on cricket matches. Police are yet to identify the culprits.

Addicted to vices, youth have been getting attracted to easy money and betting money in heavy amounts on the cricket matches.

There are allegations that the Guntur Rural police are not taking any action on the betting organisers.
