Trump’s Supporters Planning To Make Him President For Third Time?

US President Donald Trump recently displayed red hats emblazoned with the slogan “Trump 2028” on a desk at the Oval office. However, he made it clear that he would not run for vice president in the 2028 elections in the US. At present, 79-year-old Trump is serving his second term as President and the US Constitution limits presidents to two terms. He served his initial term from 2017 to 2021.

Some of his supporters suggested that the Republican can avoid the two term-rule by becoming the vice president and then step back into a vacated top job. Following these remarks, reporters asked Trump if he would run for vice president in November 2028, to which the President replied aboard Air Force One that he “would be allowed to do that”. However, he soon added: “I wouldn’t do it….. I think it’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right.”

It is worth mentioning that the US President himself mentioned that his supporters have called for him to govern beyond his current tenure, even when the US Constitution has laid rules restricting such provision.

Steve Bannon, his former advisor and one of the key ideologues of Make America Great Again Movement said “there is a plan” to keep him in the White House. Throwing light on the theory, his supporters say that current vice president JD Vance could run for president in 2028 on a ticket with Trump. According to the theory, if Vance won, he would quickly resign and put Trump back in office.

Speaking to The Economist, Bannon said that Trump is going to get a third term… he is going to be president in ’28. And people just ought to get accommodated with that.”

When asked about the 22nd Amendment in the Constitution, mandating term limits, Bannon said that there are many different alternatives. At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is, he said.
