Meta Partners with Sify to Build 500 MW Data Centre in Vizag

In a major boost to India’s digital infrastructure, Meta Platform is partnering with Sify Technologies to set up a 500-megawatt data centre in the Vizag region. The facility, coming up in Paradesipalem village, will be built by Sify with Meta as the end user. This project aligns with CM Naidu’s vision of transforming AP into a tech-driven state capable of attracting global investments.

It also strengthens Vizag’s growing role as an IT and innovation hub. IT Minister Nara Lokesh’s efforts in engaging global tech companies, improving the ease of doing business, and pushing for a strong data-centre corridor have been essential in drawing such major investments.

This is the first time Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will rent large-scale data centre capacity in India. This move indicates the company’s growing interest in tapping into the world’s largest user base for digital and AI services. It also ties into Meta’s broader “superintelligence” plans, which require immense computing power and storage.

Sify’s role is central in this project. According to sources, the company will build the entire hyperscale data centre “till the racks”, which means all infrastructure except the actual processing hardware. A data centre typically houses rows of specialised processors like GPUs and TPUs equipment that can be hired or purchased from developers like Nvidia. Discussions on this part of the investment are ongoing.

Alongside the data centre, Meta is investing in its ambitious subsea cable project named Waterworth. The cable, which will be built on the shores of Vizag and Mumbai, is expected to become the world’s longest subsea network, stretching more than 50,000 kilometres and linking US, India, Brazil and South Africa together. Once completed, it will boost global internet connectivity and significantly reduce delay for Indian users.

For Sify, the partnership could become one of its largest commitments so far, at a time when the company is preparing for a public listing in India in 2026. The AP government has also shown strong support, sanctioning 550 MW of capacity to Sify as part of its 6 GW data-centre ecosystem plan. Google has already announced its own 1 GW cluster in the region. The investment for Meta and Sify’s Vizag data centre stands at an estimated ₹15,266 crore, a sign that India’s east coast is quickly emerging as a global hub for digital infrastructure and future AI development.
