With the growing population, Hyderabad city often faces severe traffic issues. Moreover, hundreds of people die every year due to road accidents, which are mostly caused by traffic violations and drunk driving.
To curb road accidents, the city traffic police and transport department have adopted a zero tolerance policy towards rash driving and drunk driving cases. Special checks are being conducted to identify traffic violations and drivers under the influence of alcohol, as part of efforts to crack down on offenders.
Showing no leniency towards those violating rules and causing accidents, and with the aim of enforcing traffic discipline, thousands of driving licences have been cancelled over the past year. In 2025 alone, nearly 13,000 driving licences were revoked by officials.
Compared to 2024, there has been a significant rise in the number of licences cancelled across the Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad police commissionerates. Depending on the severity of the offence, licences are being suspended for six months, one year, or in some cases, permanently.
High speed driving and driving under the influence of alcohol are the main reasons for licence cancellations. Rash driving leading to accidents and driving in the wrong direction are other major causes for revocation.
After VC Sajjanar took charge as the City Police Commissioner, stricter measures have been implemented to maintain traffic discipline and law and order. Strict regulations were enforced during the New Year celebrations, with mass drunk driving checks conducted across the city.
