A shocking case of drunk driving created panic in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli last night. A 24 year old man allegedly rammed his Mercedes Benz into another car and later dragged a traffic constable on the bonnet for nearly a kilometre while trying to escape.
The accused, Gurrampati Tarun, a resident of Narsingi, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. The accident happened around 10:30 AM near Nanakramguda. Tarun’s white Mercedes hit a car from behind. Due to the impact, the victim’s vehicle lost control and crashed into the divider.
Instead of stopping, Tarun fled towards the Outer Ring Road through Gachibowli. Police were alerted immediately. At IIIT Junction, Traffic Constable Narsimhulu tried to stop the speeding car. However, the driver did not slow down. The constable ended up on the bonnet as the car moved forward at high speed.
In a dangerous sequence, the Mercedes was driven in a zig zag manner while the constable held on to save himself. The vehicle reportedly continued for nearly 800 metres to one kilometre before other motorists stepped in and helped block it. Police soon reached the spot and took Tarun into custody.
A breathalyser test showed his blood alcohol level at 160 mg per 100 ml, far above the legal limit.
Police registered two separate cases at Gachibowli Police Station. One relates to the initial collision, and the other covers drunk driving, attempt to endanger a public servant, and related offences.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras and videos that later went viral on social media. The case has once again raised serious concerns about reckless driving and the growing danger of drunk driving in the city. Investigations are ongoing.
