The onset of the Donald Trump administration in the United States has been marked with intense deportation drive across the country. The United States government is proactively working on this deportation process and sending back several illegal immigrants back to their origin countries using military force.
United States military has been commissioned by the Trump administration to carry out the deportation process, which is not just costly on the part of the government, but also hard and humiliating on the part of the immigrants.
As of now, the US military is using its C-17 and C-130 aircrafts to shepard illegal immigrants back to their countries. Incidentally, the same C-17 flight has been used to send back 205 Indian illegal immigrants which is in transit now and will be arriving in India tomorrow, February 5.
Cost of this transportation is very heavy on the state exchequer. To put that into perspective, it is reported that the United States government spent $4675 on average per each person who was deported to Guatemala recently. In a pound for pound comparison, the expenditure on the United States government is more than what it would take for a charted flight.
It takes $252K to run a C-17 flight for 12 hours. On that note, the flight that is carrying Indian immigrants from Texas to Delhi has transit period of nearly 24 hours which means the U.S. is spending over $500K on this single flight alone. On average, US is spending $17K per hour on these deportation aircrafts.
Even if we leave the financial side of things aside, the kind of humiliating aftereffects that are faced by the illegal immigrants who are returned to India are pretty steep. This society is obviously expected to treat them adequately, and even international travel could get that much tougher for them.
As it appears, this is certainly not going to be the last time that US will be deporting Indians back to the country either. Their media communication stated that the government is prepared to allocate as much funds as needed to carry out this deportation drive to the fullest, regardless of the financial consequences. It appears that Indian immigrants need to be aware of the situation and plan their future accordingly.
