The opening of Bhogapuram International Airport is being seen as a major milestone for Andhra Pradesh. But for lakhs of Telugu families, especially those living in the United States, this may be only the beginning.
Every year, thousands of people from Andhra Pradesh travel to the US for jobs, higher education and business. Many families also visit their children and relatives abroad. But even today, most of them have to first travel to Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru or Delhi before boarding an international flight.
That is why many now feel the next big goal should be direct international connectivity from Andhra Pradesh.
Bhogapuram has the potential to become a major international aviation hub in the coming years. Its location near Visakhapatnam, growing infrastructure and world class facilities make it a strong candidate for long haul international flights.
Many believe the airport itself became a reality because of the combined efforts of the NDA government, with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu playing a key role in pushing the project forward. The airport was completed in record time and is expected to transform North Andhra.
Now, the focus could shift to attracting direct flights to destinations like the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Even if nonstop US flights take time, direct connections to major international hubs would make travel much easier for passengers from Andhra Pradesh.
Better global connectivity would also help the state’s IT sector, tourism, exports, business investments and education. It would save both time and money for lakhs of travellers who currently depend on airports in neighbouring states.
Bhogapuram has already given Andhra Pradesh a world class airport. The next challenge is making it a true international gateway. If direct global connectivity becomes a reality in the coming years, it could be another game changing achievement for the state and a dream come true for Telugu people living across the world.
It should be remembered that Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu recently promised the Telugu diaspora in Europe that he would make every possible effort to enable direct flights from Europe, the US, and other countries to Andhra Pradesh’s Bhogapuram Airport. Following the airport’s rapid completion, NRIs are now eagerly waiting to see when he can turn that promise into reality.
