In a big development, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has suspended the Panchayat election notification released by the AP State Election Commission last week. Based on the notification, the state government led by CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy has filed a petition on Saturday against holding the polls. This petition came for hearing on Monday.
From Monday morning the High Court has heard the arguments in detail from the government and APSEC sides. The advocate on behalf of the YSRCP government strongly made their point to the court that the Covid-19 vaccine drive will be held in the coming days and the entire administration is busy doing the preparatory works. Under these circumstances conducting elections is not possible.
This is probably for the first time in AP history that the High Court has reversed the decision of the Election Commission which is a constitutional body. But it is unclear whether the APSEC would knock the Supreme Court on the High Court’s decision.
