Vijay Seeks Tax Exemption On His Rolls Royce Ghost, HC Fines 1 Lakh

The Madras High Court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Thalapathy Vijay for importing a luxury car Roll Royce Ghost from England and failing to pay entry tax on it. He was ordered to pay the fine amount to the Chief Minister’s Covid-19 relief fund within two weeks.

One of the top-earning stars in Tamil cinema, Vijay went on to approach the Court saying that “extraordinary” Entry tax was being imposed on the car which he imported in 2012. He requested the Court to withhold the authority from demanding or collecting entry tax.

The Court said that the petitioner C Joseph Vijay had left the occupation category black in the affidavit. The Court noted that “the petitioner, who is a reputed cine actor, is expected to pay the tax promptly and punctually. Tax is mandatory contribution and not a voluntary payment or donation, which one decides on one’s own”.

With the court’s issue on rising, netizens recall how Vijay mouthed many dialogues on corruption, GST, social justice etc. Court further took a dig at Vijay’s massive fan base and said that Tamil Nadu sees cinema heroes as real heroes and Vijay is expected to behave like a one.

“Tax evasion is to be construed as anti-national habit, attitude and minister and unconstitutional. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the Statutes,” read the Court order.

The court further slammed the actor’s frequent avoiding payment of Entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years as an unappreciated move. Hew as ordered to pay Entry tax within two weeks, by adjusting 20% of Entry Tax as ordered by the Court in the interim order dated 17/7/12, if already paid.
