The combination of director Mani Ratnam, music director AR Rahman and lyricist Vairamuthu has a legendary history in Tamil Cinema. The trio had been teaming up with each other since Roja, which was released in 1992.
However, the chain has been broken for Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Ponniyin Selvan. The director decided not to work with Vairamuthu this time. The reason being the sexual allegations against the popular lyricist. It is already known that singer Chinmayi accused Vairamuthu of sexual harassment, a couple of years back.
While Rahman is composing the music for Ponniyin Selvan, Ilango Krishnan wrote eight songs and Kabilan wrote four songs for the film. Thus, a Mani Ratnam’s film will not feature a song of Vairamuthu for the first time after almost three decades.
Ponniyin Selvan will be released in two parts. The first part will hit the screens in summer 2022. This period-drama features Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sarathkumar in the lead roles. Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies are jointly bankrolling the project.
