I Went To Deaf And Dumb Schools For Gamanam: Shriya

Actress Shriya Saran who delivered a baby girl last year in Barcelona during lockdown, is back in India after two years. She is presently promoting her upcoming flick Gamanam gearing up for release on 10th of this month.

Shriya who has been in the industry for nearly two decades wishes to do films for another 20 years. “I want to be part of cinema industry, doing different films. At the time of covid, I felt more connected to cinema. We kept watching movies, during the time.”

Shriya had her own doubts 4 to 5 years ago, whether she’s going in right direction. “Over the years, I acted with many stars like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi. I wish to do films which mean something to me. The story of Gamanam really moved me. I had tears in my eyes, after I heard the narration.”

Shriya previously worked with female directors for Midnight Children and also a Kannada movie. “Gamanam is my first Telugu film with a female director. I worked with many male technicians. They respected me and my privacy. Today, a lot of female technicians are coming. I wish to see more woman behind camera than in front.”

Shriya played Kamala, a young hearing-impaired mother in the film. “She cannot hear, but she can talk. That was a very interesting for me. When we were researching for the film, we went and saw deaf and dumb schools in Hyderabad. I wanted to bring out all their elements in the character.”

The actress says Gamanam is about internal journey of the three different characters. “Every character has its own journey and it’s about finding themselves.”
