Trade Talk: Rajamouli Is The Real Dinosaur

Whenever a big film is produced in India, it has become customary to compare it to the caliber of SS Rajamouli. Whether it’s the film’s business prospects or its promotional material, the inevitable comparisons to Rajamouli and his films have turned him into a colossal figure in the showbiz industry. Even unveiling a first-look poster, teaser, theatrical trailer, or video draws attention, and Rajamouli has proven unparalleled in these aspects.

We have seen this trend recently when Mani Ratnam released Ponniyin Selvan. The legendary director openly credited SSR that he would have never made PS 1 and PS 2 had Rajamouli did not make Baahubali.

This analogy is being applied to Prabhas’ upcoming film, Salaar. Rajamouli’s recent venture, RRR, has set the benchmark for distribution rights, and Salaar’s producers are reportedly quoting an exorbitant price that is almost on par with RRR.

The reason behind such comparisons and the tendency to link Rajamouli’s name to other films lies in his exceptional track record. Rajamouli has emerged as a visionary director in the Indian film industry, renowned for his grandeur, attention to detail, and ability to create larger-than-life cinematic experiences.

Rajamouli’s filmography boasts blockbusters such as the Baahubali series, RRR, Magadheera, and Eega, which have achieved tremendous commercial success and garnered critical acclaim nationally and internationally.

The success of Rajamouli’s films has created a unique perception among audiences and industry insiders. Whenever a new big-budget film is announced, it is expected to match or surpass the scale and impact of Rajamouli’s projects. This expectation is not limited to the film’s content alone but extends to various aspects, including distribution rights, promotional strategies, and box office numbers.

Filmmakers and producers know the massive popularity and appeal associated with Rajamouli’s name, and they leverage this recognition to generate hype and interest around their projects. By aligning their films with Rajamouli’s caliber, they hope to attract attention, secure lucrative distribution deals, and ensure a successful box office run.

However, it’s important to recognize that every film and filmmaker has a unique style and vision. While Rajamouli’s films have set new benchmarks, it is unfair to expect every film to replicate his success or match his scale.

In the case of Prabhas’ Salaar, it is understandable why the producers would want to draw parallels with Rajamouli’s RRR. Prabhas, who gained national recognition through his role in the Baahubali series, shares a strong association with Rajamouli. The combination of Prabhas’ star power and the buzz surrounding Rajamouli’s projects makes Salaar an exciting proposition for distributors and audiences alike.

While the comparisons to Rajamouli may help generate initial interest, it depends on how Prashanth Neel will showcase Prabhas in Salaar. The teaser created extensive records on Youtube, and we have to see if the film also creates records concerning the numbers at the box office.

Whatever it maybe, Rajamouli is the KIng of Indian Cinema, in all senses.
