Oscars: Big Disappointment For ‘2018’

Despite its significant success in the Malayalam film industry, the movie “2018” faced disappointment in the Oscar selection. The recently unveiled shortlist for the prestigious Oscar awards, highly regarded in the film industry, revealed the competing films in approximately ten categories.

Hollywood productions like ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ dominate most categories, while India’s ‘2018,’ which was officially selected in the Best International Feature Film category, failed to secure a spot on the list. The selection committee, chaired by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli and comprising 17 members, had officially submitted the film to the Oscars in September.

Leading the Best International Feature Film category are Denmark’s ‘The Promised Land,’ Japan’s ‘Perfect Days,’ and the UK’s ‘The Zone of Interest.’

The narrative of “2018” revolves around the devastating floods that struck Kerala in that year, claiming numerous lives. Beyond its success in Malayalam, the movie crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office and featured Tovino Thomas in the lead role, with Jude Anthony at the helm.
