After the trailer of Kalki 2898 created all the right noises and silenced the critics who were quick to dismiss the film’s prospects in the box office, cinema lovers from Tamil Nadu seem to be behaving in a surprising manner on social media.
Over the last couple of years, any pan-India project that came from the Telugu film industry met with a lot of criticism from Tamilians.
RRR and Pushpa got its fair share of brickbats for its portrayal of women and history respectively, though these films were successful in Tamil.
Animal met the same fate, with Tamilians on the Internet, calling the entire Telugu community misogynistic and whatnot, based on a handful of films.
Considering all this, it is very surprising to see an overwhelming amount of positivity come for Kalki 2898 AD from Tamil audience. A major reason for this is Kamal Hassan’s casting, which has gotten Tamil audience all hyped up for the film.
In addition to this, Tamilians on the internet are also seen owning up the film’s audacious and futuristic vision as their own, i.e., as the success of Indian cinema.
This was a very smart move by the makers of Kalki 2898 AD. By casting Kamal Hassan, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in key roles, the Tamil and Hindi industries are accepting it as their own film, a trend that will definitely reflect in the theatrical collections as well.
Also, casting such high profile actors makes promotions redundant at some level, since their inclusion in the film is enough to draw the audiences to theatres in droves.
