OTT, A Boon Or A Curse For Theatres?

Thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the theatre shutdown, the craze for the OTT platforms took a surge. But, the OTT platforms have now become a big threat to the movies which are waiting for theatrical release.

To avoid the delay in release, most of the producers are also showing interest in releasing the films on digital platforms. But, the makers are only receiving the digital as well as the streaming rights. Some of the producers got an advantage with the OTT releases as the content is bad and those movies would have been disasters at the box office. But, the movies with interesting content got huge losses because of the OTT releases.

For example, after Sushant Singh’s death, his recently released ‘Dil Bechara’ movie on the digital platforms became an instant hit. The movie analysts are saying that the movie would have been a blockbuster if the film got released in the theatres.

On the other hand, Akshay Kumar’s movies will also receive huge amounts in the first week of the release. So if his upcoming movie ‘Laxmmi’ will get released on the theatres, then the producers might have got huge profits.

Also, Kiara Advani is the biggest plus point for the film. The movie is going to get released on the 9th of this month in Hotstar. So, though OTT platforms became a blessing for some film, it became a curse for the rest of the films.
