JAAT 2 – Too Early?

The announcement of a sequel to Jaat, so soon after its release, has surprised many. The film didn’t break records like Gadar 2 or cross monumental milestones. It’s performing decently—just about crossing the ₹100 crore mark—but certainly didn’t turn into a blockbuster on the scale of Jawan or Pathaan. So the big question is: why are Mythri Movie Makers taking such a bold risk?

Sources say director Gopichand Malineni has come up with a stronger, more impactful story for the sequel, which reportedly impressed Sunny Deol enough to greenlight the project. However, this raises a few interesting questions.

Gopichand is already prepping for another high-profile project with Balakrishna—especially after the success of Veera Simha Reddy, expectations are sky-high among fans. So, will Jaat 2 begin immediately, or will it wait? Looking at Sunny Deol’s current commitments, it’s likely the latter. He’s tied up with Border 2, Lahore 1947 under Aamir Khan’s production, and is expected to appear as Lord Hanuman in Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana. He also has another film titled Safar in the pipeline. All of this could stretch things well into 2026, giving Malineni enough breathing room.

Despite not being a blockbuster, Jaat performed well in B and C centers across North India. Collections in those regions have been strong. However, the content was criticized for being too formulaic, mixing typical South-style masala with a predictable plot. Still, certain sequences did click with audiences, helping the film earn decently at the box office.

Now, fans are hoping Jaat 2 will move away from South Indian flavors and adopt a more Bollywood-centric casting and treatment. Regardless, considering how A.R. Murugadoss stumbled with Sikandar and Salman Khan, it’s commendable that Gopichand Malineni managed to deliver a modest success with Jaat. Let’s see if the sequel can take it to the next level.
