“I’m not responsible for expectations on Vaadivaasal”

Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaran says he is not responsible for the box office expectations and wants audiences to see him just as a filmmaker.

During an interview with film critic Bharadwaj Rangan, Vetrimaran divulged some insightful tit-bits on filmmaking, philosophy behind storytelling and his approach towards stories, and how he goes through the learning curve after each and every film.

To a query whether he would want to tread the same path after achieving humongous success with a specific film, Vetrimaran says he would refrain from repeating it over and again. The ‘Asuran’ director says, on a personal level, he might not be able to deliver if someone expects the same result out of him.

In a career spanning more than one and half decade in Tamil cinema, Vetrimaran dished out some exceptional stories on the big screen all creating a niche audience alongside winning awards in various categories.

He further went on to say he does not want to do a film in terms of numbers, scale and magnitude rather he would just want to simplify things. Soon after ‘Asuran’ he wanted to do a simple film with an actor who doesn’t come with baggage. The ‘Vaadivasal’ director said that he doesn’t want to fall into the zone of “living upto the expectations” anytime.

When asked as to how he can prevent expectations when two big forces of Vetrimaran and Suriya come together for upcoming venture ‘Vaadivasal’, Vetrimaran says he is here only to make films and not responsible for the expectations that audiences pinned on him. He said Tamil cinema is trying to make pan-India flicks but faltering every now and then, yet audiences are receptive to the stories that are relevant.
