Sasikumar and Simran-starrer Tourist Family was a sleeper hit in the Tamil film industry this year. Made on a modest budget by a 25-year-old debut filmmaker, Abishan Jeevinth, this movie went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in Tamil cinema this year.
Currently, the film is streaming on Jio Hotstar. Surprisingly, a lot of discussion about the film is happening on social media in a negative light.
Many people are claiming that the film is deeply problematic in how it sympathizes with the illegal entry of refugees, spreads religious hate, and also glorifies certain aspects that should be condemned in the first place.
Examples like dialogue about beef consumption are being joked about, and other elements are infused subtly in layers, which many are finding problematic on social media. Especially, the debate has intensified since the film’s release on OTT, whereas there were no such opinions when it was released in theaters.
Interestingly, some of the netizens are also comparing it with Chatrapathi. Even in Chatrapathi, Prabhas and others migrate from Srilanka and reach Vizag as refugees. Many opine that Prabhas was hailed, but the characters in Tourist Family were being called problematic.
However, the people who are defending Chatrapathi are saying that Prabhas and his gang were official refuges. The government has records of them, and everything went ahead as per the system. Especially when there are a lot of illegal entrants from Bangladesh to India, the topic has been widely discussed. Now, the film Tourist Family is also feeding the discussion.
Whatever it may be, Tourist Family is getting a positive response from everyone. Let us hope that the unnecessary hatred does not put a blanket on the talent of a young director.
