SC Asks To Lift Ban On Thug Life: Would It Make Any Difference?

Actor Kamal Haasan recently stirred controversy with his remarks about the Kannada language during a promotional event for his film, Thug Life. His statements that Kannada originated from Tamil didn’t go well with the Kannada people, and eventually, the Karnataka Film Chamber imposed a ban on Thug Life’s release in the state.

When Kamal Haasan approached the Karnataka High Court by filing a petition against this ban, the Karnataka High court slammed Kamal for his statements in return and asked whether if he is a historian to comment on languages. The court ordered that Kamal apologise for his statements, but he didn’t do so.

Now, the case went to the Supreme Court, and after hearing it, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan slammed the government of Karnataka and ordered it to lift the ban on Thug Life. It stated that any film that has certification from the Central Board of Film Certification must be released, and the state has to ensure its screening.

Meanwhile, people on social media felt that lifting the ban would not make any difference because Thug Life has ended up as a disaster in all areas already and releasing it in Karnataka would be of no use. Upon hearing the case, the Supreme Court also criticised the Karnataka High Court for demanding an apology from Kamal.

The bench stated that if Kamal Haasan made any inconvenient statements, they could not be taken as gospel truth, and the people of Karnataka should have debated and disproven his claims. It also said that there is no need to seek an apology from Kamal. The court gave a day to the Karnataka government to apprise it about the film’s release.

Earlier, it was widely speculated that Kamal’s future films will also face a risk in Karnataka. But, the court’s latest verdict proved the fact that no one can ever repeat a similar reaction ever and Supreme Court will prevent such things from happening again.
