The Tamil film Thalaivan Thalaivi, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, released worldwide today. The Telugu version, titled Sir Madam, had its trailer released a week ago, but the film didn’t hit theatres here.
The main reason? Heavy competition. Hari Hara Veera Mallu occupied most theatres in its first week. At the same time, Mahavatar Narasimha, backed by Hombale Films, secured a good release in AP and Telangana. Multiplexes are also supporting the film Saira, and Hollywood’s Fantastic Four: First Steps also entered the scene.
With such tight competition, the makers of Sir Madam decided to delay the release. Meanwhile, reviews from Tamil audiences are positive, praising the film for its comedy, emotions, and strong entertainment value.
Despite the good buzz, Sir Madam now faces a tricky situation. Next week, Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom is releasing, followed by Son of Sardar 2 and biggies like Coolie & War 2 in coming weeks. If it doesn’t release next week, Sir Madam, Telugu may go straight to OTT.
This isn’t the first time such a thing happened. Earlier, Tourist Family also missed a theatrical release and went directly to Disney+ Hotstar. Trade circles say that Sir Madam had potential to do well if it had released quietly today, as word of mouth could have helped it reach break-even. But now, it looks like a missed opportunity.
