Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has approached the Delhi high court seeking protection of her personality rights. In her petition, Aishwarya alleged that some rogue websites were using her name and image without any authorization. The actress also claimed that this unauthorised use of her persona is a part of online fraud which is also a threat to the celebrities’ identities.
The case hearing was adjourned till January, but the court is likely to grant interim injunctions against infringers. At the same time, the justice also delivered a verdict that a detailed written order would be issued such that Aishwarya Rai’s rights would be protected.
“There are only 151 URLs which will form part of the order as far as you are concerned… We will pass orders against each of defendants because prayers are broad. But we will grant injunctions separately,” Justice Karia remarked.
Aishwarya Rai also requested liberty to extend the order to “John Doe” defendants—unidentified parties that may host similar infringing material in the future. John Doe is one type of a court order agianst unidentified parties in intellectual property and personality rights cases.
There were many cases where the celebrities have approached the courts, in protection of their rights.
