Karnataka High Court Puts Hold on ₹200 Movie Ticket Price Cap

The Karnataka government recently announced that movie ticket prices in the state would be capped at ₹200 for all theatres, including multiplexes. The order was meant to make movies more affordable.

Under the new rule, single-screen theatres would have tickets priced between ₹120 and ₹200. Multiplexes, including IMAX, 4DX, and ICE screens, could charge up to ₹236. Multiplexes with fewer than 75 seats were allowed to charge more than ₹200.

However, the move faced objections from theatre owners and film producers. They said the rule was unfair because multiplexes have higher costs than single-screen theatres. They also pointed out that the law did not clearly define what “premium” small theatres are.

On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court stayed the government’s order. Justice Ravi V. Hosmani ruled that theatres could continue charging as they wish until the court decides further. Petitions were filed by the Multiplex Association of India, film producers, and shareholders of PVR and INOX.

The petitioners argued that fixing ticket prices for all theatres was unnecessary. They said ticket pricing should depend on the type of theatre, facilities offered, and customer choice. The state argued the rule was meant to help the public and the film industry.

For now, theatres in Karnataka can continue charging ticket prices as they normally do. The High Court’s order will remain in effect until further notice
