Will Ilayaraja’s Win in Copyright Fight Open Doors for Many?

Ilaiyaraaja is one of the legendary music composer who worked on more than 1000 films in his career. The star composer recently filed a copyright claim against Mythri Movie Makers for the usage of his songs in Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly without his permission. Now, the latest development revealed that the producers settled the case with Ilaiyaraaja by paying him 50 lakh rupees as a compensation.

Interestingly, the producers used Ilaiyaraaja’s music in the film Dude as well. The producers claim that they used the music by paying money to the music company that hold the rights of his music. However, Ilaiyaraaja approached the legal authorities, asking for a compensation.

Finally, the producers came for a compromise and settled this with an amount of Rs 50 lakhs. In the past, Ilaiyaraaja asked for a compensation of Rs. 2 Cr rupees from the makers of Manjummel Boys but they settled the case by paying a compensation of Rs 60 lakhs.

There are chances that other music directors will also follow a similar route and usage of others’ music will become tough in the coming days. Ilaiyaraaja is fighting for a cause saying that due credit must be given to those who originally created the music.
