Indian Cinema’s Highest Footfall Film Is Back In Theatres Again!

Sholay is one of the all-time iconic movies in Bollywood. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, and others, it was released on August 15th, 1975. Now, the film is heading for a re-release next week.

During the initial release, the censor board objected to some scenes, and the makers released it with a duration of 198 minutes. Later, the original director’s cut of 204 minutes became available on home media.

When Sholay was released, it opened to negative reviews from everyone. But, it picked up with positive word of mouth and went on to become a big success at the box office. It was the highest-grossing Indian film at the time of its release, and even today, it holds the record for the highest footfalls in Indian cinema.

The film will have a release in its uncut and original version. Restored in 4K with Dolby 5.1, the film releases on 12 Dec 2025, marking the first-ever theatrical presentation of the original uncut version in its Golden Jubilee year.

The film’s plot is: Jai and Veeru, two ex-convicts, are hired by Thakur Baldev Singh, a retired policeman, to help him nab Gabbar Singh, a notorious dacoit, who has spread havoc in the village of Ramgarh.

Produced by Sippy Films, Shola is directed by Ramesh Sippy. Restored by the Film Heritage Foundation, the movie is releasing theatrically via PEN Marudhar.
