Was Stranger Things Written With AI?

When AI and GPT began trending, and the world began discussing whether they would replace jobs, the Screenwriters in Hollywood almost resisted, going on strike. However, in an ironic twist, the makers of Netflix’s Stranger Things series face accusations that they used AI to script the series.

It all started with the release of the documentary Stranger Things: One Last Adventure, which has reignited criticism of the show’s polarising finale.

Many accused that the script for the finale is not entirely human-written and that they relied on AI. The documentary featured many visuals in which multiple ChatGPT tabs appeared open on a computer belonging to the makers. It fueled these speculations.

“The Great Duffer brother used Chatgpt to write Stranger Things Season 5. WTF man, now we know why season 5 sucked. #StrangerThings5,” one wrote, with another sharing, “The Duffer Brothers were literally using ChatGPT and Reddit while writing this season & particularly the finale of Stranger Things. No wonder it’s complete,” accused an user on social media.

However, many users are personally loving the finale episode, claiming that they are satisfied with the ending. If AI is helping in such a way to create engaging scripts, it is not a bad trend though. Moreover, it is the creator who is giving the input and getting the desired script and it all depends on what is being fed to the AI.

Set in the nostalgic landscape of 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, Stranger Things follows a close-knit group of friends whose lives are upended when their friend Will Byers vanishes. After its debut in 2016, Stranger Things concluded in 2025 after nine years.
