ARR’s Subtle Reaction to the Ongoing Negativity

AR Rahman is one of the most respected and celebrated music composers across the globe. Even today, he remains busy with multiple projects across industries. In a recent interview, Rahman spoke openly about the highs and lows of his long career and addressed the criticism that claims he is not delivering music like he did during his early days.

Sharing his thoughts, Rahman said that people often compare his current work with his 1990s classics like Roja. He pointed out that such comparisons are unfair and can affect an artist’s mindset. Rahman explained that he is now consciously choosing fewer films as he is simultaneously working on Ramayana, a project with Mani Ratnam, and his own band. He also revealed that he has worked on nearly 20 to 30 films in the last six years and now wants to give himself time and space.

In a way, Rahman’s words make complete sense. At the same time, it cannot be denied that his recent music has not created chartbusters with the same long-lasting impact as his iconic 90s albums. Many of his newer works may not instantly make audiences groove the way his earlier works did, but that does not take away from his musical depth or legacy.

What deserves appreciation is the fact that Rahman continues to evolve. He is adapting to changing audience tastes and experimenting with different genres to stay relevant. Catering to the expectations of the younger generation while retaining his core musical identity has become his biggest challenge today.

During the release of Chhaava, expectations were high, especially considering the magic Rahman created earlier with films like Jodhaa Akbar. However, the album and background score failed to impress many, leading to heavy criticism and trolling. Despite the negativity, Rahman chose to remain silent and did not react publicly.

Instead, he responded through his work. His latest project Peddi has brought him back into the spotlight, with the Chikiri song already emerging as a top hit. Turning criticism into motivation, Rahman now looks ready to deliver strong and memorable music again. Adding to the excitement, he has also joined hands with global music icon Hans Zimmer for the highly anticipated Ramayana, a collaboration that could truly change the narrative around his recent work.
