During an interview with the BBC, AR Rahman spoke about his lean phase in his career, sparking a nationwide debate. Rahman brought in a communal aspect into the entire issue, claiming that he has gone out of work for said reasons. But, after all the outrage, Rahman politely posted a video where he clarified that his intention was misunderstood. In this context, popular Telugu filmmaker and music label owner, Madhura Sreedhar Reddy shared his perspective.
In a detailed post on social media, Sreedhar Reddy shared as to how music companies struggle for survival and the strategies that they build in getting their return of investment back. The companies experiment with different combinations which does not mean that they are disrespecting someone.
Sreedhar shared an insight that, “For the past 15 years—especially in Bollywood—the system itself has changed: multiple music directors for one film, different composers for songs, and another for background scores. This is an industry-wide shift, not discrimination.”
Additionally, he pointed out that someone like Rahman should not have commented like this. “When a globally respected artist makes statements blaming communal factors for industry changes, especially at a sensitive time for the country, it creates confusion and division. A responsible public figure should acknowledge industry evolution, not misattribute it. Words matter!!!” he wrote.
Madhura Sreedhar reacted as below:
“People who are not creative have the power now to decide things, and this might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers. I said, ‘Oh, that’s great, rest for me, I can chill out with my family.” said Rahman earlier.
