Conveying emotions without a dialogue is no mean task. This is why silent films come once in a blue moon as attempting such a complex concept is not everyone’s cup of tea. Only a few filmmakers in the past explored the traits of a silent film exceedingly well and managed to impress moviegoers.
After a long time, director Kishor Pandurang Balekar is going to take audience back to the era of silent films with his upcoming movie Gandhi Talks which is headlined by a star-studded casting with the likes of Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav playing significant roles in the narrative.
Ahead of the film’s release on January 30th the theatrical trailer has been unveiled today morning and it offers an insight into the core plot while introducing all leading characters. The two and a half minute trailer hints that the story oscillates between two starkly contrasting individuals played by Vijay Sethupathi who toils hard to meet his ends and an affluent business tycoon essayed by Arvind Swamy.
After a few glimpses, Aditi Rao Hydari makes a charming entry. When Vijay falls for her, more troubles ensue in the former’s life. Meanwhile, Arvind Swamy tries to pull himself together after a heart-breaking tragedy in his life.
Despite having no dialogue, the visuals in the trailer are quite immersive because of the soulful and haunting background scores rendered by maestro AR Rahman and the earnest physical performances of the actors. Going by what unfolds in the trailer, it seems like the film explores the harsh realities of life with and without money.
How all characters navigate their lives in the midst of the emotional and financial turmoil is going to drive the narrative forward. The last scene showcases images of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi and Bhagat Singh and this depiction meets more than a eye because the director might be conveying a subtle message through it to moviegoers.
In the present era, when moviegoers are embracing larger than life scripts with massive soundscapes and vfx-laden visuals, attempting a silent film with honest portrayal of emotions is a gutsy move with a lot of risk involved as far as the commercial success is concerned.
But, if the film garners critical acclaim, it will be a big success for the efforts put in by the team. We have to wait and see how the theatrical response will be for this film.
