Nizam Box Office: Old Happy Days Back for Tollywood?

Nizam( Telangana) is the biggest single territory of Tollywood. Major chunk of revenues earned by Telugu movies come from this particular box office segment. This is why our producers often lobby for ticket hikes and additional shows.

Unfortunately, Telugu cinema has been going through difficult times in Nizam from the past year or so due to various political and legal factors. After the Sandhya theatre stampede issue and subsequent controversies, Revanth Reddy’s government has been reluctant to grant a freehand to Tollywood.

Also, the High Court has come down heavily several times over what it felt as unreasonable rise in ticket fares for big movies. It has adopted a strong stance to not entertain any last minute requests for ticket hikes and also issued strict instructions to the state government against granting special privileges without its consent.

Amid these setbacks and uncertainty, industry circles felt that the road ahead for big-ticket films will be very tough as several high budget movies are slated for release throughout this year. But, the recent developments augur well for Tollywood as things now seem more rosy and cheerful.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy himself presided over the events of Netflix office and Allu Cinemas in Hyderabad. He assured complete support to Telugu film industry in all terms from his government.

Also, the Supreme Court has struck down the order of High Court which put a harsh condition of 90 days prior request mandatory for ticket hikes.

With many biggies lined up starting from Ustaad Bhagat Singh, it seems like the road is almost clear for Tollywood to return back to those good old days. It is indeed a positive sign after a brief period of disappointment for both audiences and industry in the biggest box office territory of Telugu cinema.

If the industry is able to get proper and clear guidelines from the government regarding ticket price GOs, and also receives permanent relief from the Supreme Court on such matters, then there may not be any further speed breakers for Tollywood in Nizam. With clarity on policies and government support, the path ahead could become much smoother for big-ticket films in the region.
