Last week’s Telugu releases Biker and Rakasa saw noticeable impact at the box office due to the ongoing Indian Premier League, especially during evening and night shows. With crucial matches drawing massive TV and digital viewership, theatrical footfalls took a hit despite decent word of mouth.
Now, the focus shifts to this week’s releases, Dacoit, LIK, and Pallichattambi. However, the challenge remains the same. The first weekend of these films coincides with high-voltage IPL clashes featuring top teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
With such strong competition from cricket, evening occupancy in theatres is expected to face pressure yet again. This makes content and word of mouth even more crucial for these films.
To overcome the IPL effect, the new releases will need solid audience reception right from day one. Positive talk can drive weekend growth and help sustain collections despite cricket fever dominating prime-time viewership across the country.
