Prithviraj Planning a Sequel Despite the Controversy?

Prithviraj Sukumaran proved himself as a director only after he delivered a blockbuster with Lucifer. Until then, everyone thought that he is a successful actor. However, his directorial Empuraan opened to multiple controversies during the time of release and emerged as an industry hit in Malayalam.

At the time of release, he was committed to doing a sequel to the film and despite criticism, he seems to be adamant about making it happen now. As per the latest reports, he is actively planning to materialise this project.

Prithviraj explained that he also has other commitments as a director, which he needs to complete before focusing fully on Empuraan 3. So, even though the film is planned, it may take some time to begin.

In the meantime, Mohanlal is also busy and only based on his availability does the project moves ahead. But the big question is the risk that is involved for both Prithviraj and Mohanlal especially after the film was surrounded by multiple religious controversies.

Prithviraj and Mohanlal have collaborated earlier and delivered great hits. L2: Empuraan was a big film in 2025 and gained a lot of attention, both for its success and for the controversies.

Some people criticized parts of the film, saying they were inspired by sensitive real-life events. However, the team is confident about scripting history again with the third part, for which the ground work reportedly began.

Whatever it may be, Prithviraj also gained a pan-India appeal with his recent hits and most importantly, he will be playing villain in Rajamouli’s Varanasi, with which he will gain international recognition. In that context, it will be helpful for his career if he ups the game and move pawns to make Empuraan 3 happen.
