At Directors Day event held in Hyderabad to mark the birth anniversary of Dasari Narayana Rao, veteran actor, Director Narayana Murthy made some straightforward and thought provoking comments about the current state of the film industry.
He pointed out a clear concern. There are very few big releases during important seasons like summer. He recalled how legends like Krishna and Dasari used to work at an incredible pace, delivering multiple films every year. According to him, that kind of energy and speed is missing today.
In recent years, filmmaking has slowed down significantly. Not only star heroes, but even directors are taking two to three years to complete one project.
In the case of filmmakers like Rajamouli, the scale and vision justify the long timelines. But the same cannot be said for many others who are working on medium range films and still taking excessive time.
Murthy stressed that for the industry to remain active and healthy, films need to release regularly. He reminded how Dasari used to handle multiple shoots at once and work across several shifts in a day. Even Chiranjeevi, during the early stage of his career, managed to release a large number of films in a single year.
Today, however, leading stars like Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan, NTR, Allu Arjun are struggling to deliver even one film per year.
At the same time, he made it clear that quality should never be compromised. The industry has already seen how poor content can lead to major box office failures. The goal should be to balance both speed and quality.
If every major star delivers at least one film a year, theatres will have enough content to survive throughout the year. Otherwise, with ongoing delays and fewer releases, the situation for theatres, especially single screens, may become even more difficult in the coming years.
