Suriya’s long delayed film Karuppu has been in the news for quite some time now because of rumours, controversies and back-to-back postponements. Yet, there is no clarity on when exactly it will hit the screens. After facing multiple delays due to various reasons, the film is finally announced for a grand release on May 14.
However, it seems like the ongoing political crisis in Tamil Nadu might spoil the plans again. These doubts grew stronger after director Balaji said the trailer release was delayed due to the ongoing political turmoil.
Karuppu was initially supposed to hit the screens for Diwali last year. But, the release got postponed as they couldn’t complete the production formalities. The team then planned for a Pongal release and again stepped back due to pending CG effects. At last, they decided to arrive during peak Summer and after the assembly elections ends in Tamil Nadu. So, they locked an ideal date thinking that political normalcy would be restored after the results.
Unfortunately, the ongoing political turmoil in Tamil Nadu has once again pushed the release plans into a big dilemma. With Vijay’s TVK still unable to form the government and lots of political discussions taking place, there is no certainty on what will unfold next. It has been three days since the results were declared, but the suspense still continues.
As things stand now, it seems like the crisis is not ending any time sooner. With just a week to go for the release date, it is unclear whether the makers of Karuppu will take the risk and go ahead with their plans during the critical time when the entire state is closely watching the political spectacle unfold.
If the drama ends in the next couple of days and the new government forms immediately, Karuppu might arrive on May 14 as announced earlier. Otherwise, another delay is inevitable and Suriya and his team will have no option but to choose another date. This will be another big blow for the film because the buzz has dampened due to repeated delays and rumours.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu stars Trisha, Indrans, Natty, Swasika, and Sshivadha, among others. Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures, the film has music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu, and editing by R Kalaivanan.
