Explained: The Real Root Cause Of Telugu Cinema’s Crisis

Tollywood is currently under heat regarding the percentage system demand from theatre owners to producers. The ongoing arguments between producers, distributors, and exhibitors have created enough noise in the industry over the last few weeks. But according to many inside the industry, the actual problem lies somewhere else.

The biggest concern now is the lack of films that genuinely excite audiences to step into theatres. While discussions continue around rental systems and revenue sharing models, theatre footfalls continue to fall rapidly. Industry observers feel that audiences are not rejecting theatres. They are simply rejecting weak cinema.

The first half of this year has reportedly been one of the most disappointing phases for Telugu cinema in recent times. Except for a handful of films, very few releases managed to create strong theatrical excitement. Even films that opened decently failed to sustain audience attention for long.

Many believe the decline started from the writing stage itself. Strong storytelling, emotional connection, and memorable cinematic moments are missing in most films today. Audiences are still ready to spend money for a good theatrical experience, but only if the content truly motivates them.

Interestingly, some are even comparing the current phase with the lockdown period. Despite theatres being shut during the pandemic, there was still curiosity and excitement around upcoming releases. But now, even with theatres functioning normally, the excitement surrounding Telugu cinema appears limited.

Social media conversations may create temporary hype, but audiences are quickly moving on from films within days. Many viewers are no longer interested in watching movies collectively in theatres unless the film offers something genuinely memorable.

Several voices within Tollywood are now urging all stakeholders to stop fighting over systems and percentages and instead focus on improving content quality. The solution is simple. If good films arrive, audiences will automatically return to theatres.

At this point, Tollywood’s biggest challenge may not be the percentage system debate. It may simply be the absence of cinema powerful enough to bring people back to the big screen.
