1000cr Miracle Obsession: How Did It Open in India?

After creating a sensation across the globe, Obsession finally arrived in Indian theatres with strong anticipation and considerable social media buzz. However, despite the hype surrounding the film’s extraordinary international success, its opening day performance in India remained average, collecting around ₹2 crore on Day 1.

The film’s journey in India appears to be facing a few challenges. Unlike many successful international releases, Obsession was released only in English, with no dubbed versions in major Indian languages.

In several locations, even subtitles were reportedly unavailable, making it difficult for a wider audience to connect with the film. This limited accessibility may have affected its initial box office numbers.

Adding to the challenge are reports suggesting that the movie could arrive on digital platforms as early as June 2. If true, the possibility of an early OTT release could discourage casual moviegoers from visiting theatres, especially those who are already aware of the film’s upcoming streaming availability.

Nevertheless, the film’s global achievement remains remarkable. Made on a modest budget of approximately ₹7 crore, Obsession has reportedly crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark worldwide, placing it among the most profitable films in recent years.

Similar milestones have previously been achieved only by a select group of blockbuster films worldwide. The coming weekend will be crucial in determining whether Indian audiences gradually embrace this worldwide miracle and help it build momentum through positive word-of-mouth.
