Shalini Kondapolam has made an interesting observation about the way female characters are written in today’s cinema. During a recent interaction as a part of her upcoming film Sing Geetham, she pointed out that women are often missing from the comedy space, especially when it comes to genuinely entertaining characters.
According to Shalini, there is a misconception that women centric roles should always revolve around serious emotions, struggles, or social messages. She feels audiences also deserve to see women in fun, quirky, and relatable roles that can make them laugh.
The actress said she is not necessarily looking for grand women centric films. Instead, she would love to see more stories where female characters are naturally funny, flawed, and entertaining without being reduced to stereotypes.
Shalini observed that Telugu cinema has produced many memorable comic male characters over the years, but there are very few female characters that enjoy the same popularity. She believes there is a huge opportunity for writers to explore this space.
Interestingly, she revealed that situational comedy interests her more than exaggerated humor. Stories about everyday women, dysfunctional families, and relatable life situations excite her as a writer and performer.
At a time when filmmakers are searching for fresh ideas, Shalini’s point sounds valid. Audiences do not just need powerful female leads. They also need female characters who can entertain, surprise, and leave a smile on their faces.
