Legendary Director Bharathiraja Passes Away

Indian cinema lost one of its greatest filmmakers today. Legendary Tamil director Bharathiraja passed away at the age of 85 after battling health issues for the last few years. Sources say the sudden demise of his son Manoj last year deeply affected him emotionally, and his condition gradually worsened afterward.

Bharathiraja changed the face of Tamil cinema forever. At a time when most films were shot inside studios, he took cameras into real villages and natural locations, bringing raw rural emotions onto the big screen. His debut film 16 Vayathinile, starring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, became a sensational blockbuster in 1977. The film was later remade in Telugu as Padaharella Vayasu.

His Sigappu Rojakkal created another sensation and became a super hit in Telugu as Erra Gulabilu. In 1981, Seethakoka Chiluka emerged as a trendsetting musical love story. Even today, the songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja remain unforgettable for Telugu audiences.

Such was Bharathiraja’s impact that even Chiranjeevi wanted to work with him during his peak stardom. That combination resulted in Aradhana, produced by Allu Aravind. Though the film did not recreate the original magic commercially, it remains a memorable attempt.

From intense revenge dramas to gripping crime thrillers, Bharathiraja always had a unique storytelling style. Films like Tik Tik Tik, Khaidi Vetta, and Jamadagni showcased his versatility. He also started a successful second innings as an actor with Yuva directed by Mani Ratnam. His few mins appearance in Dhanush ‘Sir’ movie got a big applause.

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2004. Whether as a director, writer, or actor, Bharathiraja left a permanent mark on Indian cinema. His films, characters, and emotions will continue to inspire generations forever.
