Why Dhurandhar Heading Towards Disaster In Japan?

After shattering numerous box office records in India and North America, Bollywood’s smash hit Dhurandhar landed in theatres in Japan on July 10th. Unfortunately, despite the substantial hype surrounding its arrival, the spy thriller failed to make a powerful initial impact on the competitive Japanese box office.

On its opening day, Dhurandhar struggled to find its footing and ultimately missed out on securing a spot among the top 25 films currently running in the country. Early tracking numbers from reliable box office data suggests that the film took a disastrous opening on the first day.

Despite releasing around 80 screens across Japan by the end of the evening, the Aditya Dhar directional stumbled on the first day with disappointing footfalls overall which are less than 900 viewers. The lukewarm response appears to be due to lack of proper release strategy from the makers.

Despite the fact the Indian films have a substantial market in Japan, there are no promotions from Dhurandhar team. Also, they failed to choose a perfect release season for the film.

All these factors resulted in a shocking start at the box office on the first day. What is more surprising is that the film couldn’t even get a place in the list of top 10 biggest opening Indian films in Japan.

This underwhelming performance of Dhurandhar is similar to that of Pushpa 2, which also missed the top 10 by landing in 14th place. For context, SS Rajamouli’s RRR still comfortably sits at the top for the biggest Indian opening day in Japan with a massive 8,230 footfalls, followed closely by Saaho (6,510) and Kalki 2898 AD (3,700).

If Dhurandhar fails to gain any momentum in the first weekend, it is almost an end card for the box office journey in Japan.
