Will Tamil Audience Accept Telugu Director At Full Capacity With VAS?

Ahead of Suriya’s Vishwanath And Sons release on August 14 in Tamil and Telugu, the one question that is being discussed now is Will the Tamil audience accept a film from a Telugu director Venky Atluri on a big scale?

Telugu audiences have generally shown strong interest in films from different industries. If the content connects, language and industry background have not been major barriers. The situation is slightly different in Tamil Nadu compared to the Telugu states. 

However, Tamil audiences have been a little more selective when Tamil stars work with directors from other industries. There are examples like Suriya’s 24 and Dhanush’s Vaathi (Sir in Telugu) and Kuberaa, where the films performed moderatelywell in Tamil Nadu but did not become as successful as in Telugu.

That makes Vishwanath And Sons an interesting test. Venky Atluri is a Telugu filmmaker, while Suriya has a strong following in Tamil Nadu. The film is also positioned as an emotional family entertainer, which could help it connect with a wider audience. 

The biggest question is whether Tamil audiences will accept the film purely as a Suriya film and judge it on its content, or whether the Telugu director factor will have some impact.

If Vishwanath And Sons gets strong word of mouth, the language and director’s background may not matter much. But if the film receives only an average response, it could once again raise questions about how much Tamil audiences are willing to embrace Tamil stars working with filmmakers from outside the industry.

As the film opens this weekend, the all eyes are on Tamil Nadu’s BO numbers. The real test is not just whether Vishwanath And Sons performs well in Tamil Nadu, but whether Tamil collections can make a big difference and give the VAS a strong home-market advantage.
