The success of Mirzapur on the big screen could open a new door for popular web series. Before its theatrical release, there were plenty of doubts about whether a series that already had a strong OTT following could attract audiences to cinemas.
However, the response has shocked one and all as Mirzapur is now emerging as a blockbuster theatrical success and has crossed the ₹200 crore mark. The strong box-office performance has proved that a popular streaming franchise can create enough excitement to bring its audience back to theatres.
Until now, most of these franchises were designed primarily for streaming, with theatrical releases considered risky. Mirzapur has challenged that thinking. The success of Mirzapur could now make producers and OTT platforms think differently.
Several successful web series like Scam 1992, The Family Man, and Delhi Crime have already built loyal fan bases over the years. The big question now is whether these successful web series will follow the same route.
However, not every popular series can automatically become a box-office hit. The theatrical version needs to offer something bigger and more cinematic than what audiences get on OTT. The timing, scale, story, and promotional strategy will also play a major role.
For now, Mirzapur has shown that the experiment can work. If the momentum continues, more popular web series could soon get a shot at the big screen. Let’s see what happens.
