Why Sree Vishnu Prefers Malayalam For Pure Drama?

Sree Vishnu has clarified his recent comments about Malayalam cinema and its audience acceptance. A few days ago, the actor said that if he wanted to make a pure drama, he would prefer making it in Malayalam and then dubbing it into Telugu.

His statement led to some trolling, with a section of people questioning how he could look down on Telugu audiences. Now, Sree Vishnu has explained what he actually meant.

Speaking to Gulte, he said, “We watch Malayalam films and sometimes wonder what is there in the film to become such a hit. We feel such films work in Malayalam but here in Telugu, people need commerciality.”

Sree Vishnu was clearly talking about the difference in audience expectations. He says Malayalam films can sometimes survive with a slow or serious drama because the audience there is more accepting of such storytelling.

In Telugu cinema, however, Sree Vishnu feels that filmmakers need to add some commercial elements to make a drama connect with a wider audience. Though serious dramas have worked in Telugu in the past, Sree Vishnu says one hardly remembers names of such films.

Sree Vishnu has often experimented with different subjects, and his latest film Comrade Kalyan is no different. The film blends comedy with a Naxal backdrop, with Sree Vishnu’s character bringing humour into the otherwise serious setting. The film releases on October 9, 2026.
