The speculation about the postponement of SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi has been doing the rounds on social media. The film, starring Mahesh Babu, is scheduled for a grand release on April 7, 2027. However, there is a major reason why the makers may think twice before changing the date.
Varanasi has secured an exclusive IMAX release window for April 2027. This is a significant advantage for a film of its scale, as IMAX screens can help deliver a bigger theatrical experience and attract audiences across markets.
Securing such a window is not an easy task, especially when several major films are competing for premium screens. If the makers decide to postpone the film, they may find it difficult to secure another exclusive IMAX window.
A change in the release date could mean competing with other big-ticket projects for the same screens, potentially affecting the film’s global release plans. Given the massive scale of the project and the expectations surrounding Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s collaboration, the team would not want to make such a decision.
Unless the post-production work requires a significant extension, the existing release plan could remain the priority. With the IMAX window being a crucial factor, moving Varanasi from April 7, 2027, may be far more complicated than it appears.
