The Telugu film industry is known for its big stars and huge budgets. But when it comes to telling simple, fresh stories, it seems our filmmakers are missing something, probably because they are too focused on maintaining the heroes’ star image. A few recent films from other South Indian industries have raised this question.
For example, Telugu director Venky Atluri’s Suriya Vishwanath and Sons and Malayalam director Girish’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, starring Nivin Pauly explore age gap romance. Similarly Venkatesh’s Aadarsha Kutumbam directed by Trivikram and the Tamil film Blast directed by Subhash share similar core ideas.
However, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and Arjun Blast seem to have connected better with audiences and created more impact at the box office despite being made on much smaller budgets.
So what is the difference is the major point of discussion. One important factor could be the way filmmakers look at their heroes.
In Telugu cinema, most of the directors often seem more concerned about maintaining a hero’s image. They think about what fans might say if their favourite star is shown in a different way. Because of this, the story sometimes takes a back seat while the hero’s image gets more importance.
But Malayalam and Tamil filmmakers appear to approach things differently. Nivin Pauly is a popular star, yet his films are not always made around his image. The character and the story seem to come first. The same can be said about Arjun Blast where the focus is not just on presenting Arjun as a hero. This is where Telugu filmmakers may be missing an opportunity.
In Suriya Vishwanath and Sons, there is a feeling that Suriya is given more importance while Aadarsha Kutumbam seems to focus heavily on presenting Venkatesh in a particular way. When filmmakers keep thinking about how to showcase their heroes, the story may sometimes lose its natural flow.
Of course Telugu stars have huge fan bases and their image plays an important role in attracting audiences. But that does not mean every telugu director should just follow the same formula. Now a days audiences are open to different stories and unusual characters. They want to see their favourite heroes in fresh roles and situations.
So a good story does not always need a huge budget or a star’s image to succeed. Sometimes honest emotions and interesting characters are enough.
Perhaps Telugu filmmakers need to trust their stories a little more and worry less about protecting their heroes’ images. After all audiences remember good films and not just hero elevations.
