Jailer 2 Coming Home, Bad News for Those Theatres!

Jailer 2 is one of the most successful films in recent times. The second part of the Jailer series fared better than the first one at the box office. The film is still running successfully in theatres, pulling in modest revenue. Very soon, the film will land on Amazon Prime Video, and the platform has announced the release date as November 12th. However, this will affect the film’s ongoing theatrical performance.

In many places, theatre owners refused to replace Jailer 2 with new releases, including the Diwali biggies. They intended that the audiences, especially the families, during Diwali would experience Jailer 2 on the big screens. Since Diwali is a crucial festival for Tamilians, the natural expectation is that Jailer 2 will have a further strong run. But Amazon just dropped a bomb that will make everyone preparing for a theatrical experience wait another week to watch the film from the comfort of their homes.

Jailer 2 was released in theatres on October 15th, and in just 28 days, the film will be available on a digital platform. The film grossed over 800 Cr rupees worldwide at the box office. The movie’s performance in Telugu states and overseas has been strong. Even going by these numbers, the makers could have negotiated with the platform to postpone the OTT release date announcement. That way, the film could have generated more revenue at ticket windows. Now, it is a lost chance for many theatres.

Having said and done, the ongoing rumors suggest the team wants to add additional footage to the film, especially the many deleted scenes of Mohanlal. But there is no official clarity on the same. Many actors from the first part were retained in the second part. Hrithik Roshan is a big value addition to the second part along with SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramudu, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakravarthy.

Directed by Nelson, the film is produced by Sun Pictures. Anirudh Ravichander scored the music. There is an opening ending to the film, hinting at Jailer 3 sometime in the future.
