Ranbir Kapoor is currently enjoying the positive response to Ramayana Part 1. The film has generated good expectations, and its box office performance will eventually decide how big a success it turns out to be.
However, one of Ranbir’s recent comments about Varanasi has caught the attention of Telugu audiences. Speaking on a promotional interview, the actor said that RRR opened doors for Indian cinema in international markets, and Ramayana has now opened doors for Varanasi. While he might have made the statement with good intentions, some feel he could have slipped a little while making the comparison.
Varanasi is already one of the most anticipated Indian films, with enormous expectations surrounding its business prospects. Even without revealing much about the film, SS Rajamouli has managed to create tremendous buzz. The project is attracting attention purely because of the filmmaker’s reputation and the scale at which he is mounting it.
Rajamouli hardly needs an introduction when it comes to taking Indian cinema to global audiences. Baahubali proved the massive box office potential of Indian films, while RRR brought international recognition and an Oscar to Indian cinema. His work also earned appreciation from legendary filmmakers like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg.
Telugu fans feel Varanasi has already established its own identity and does not need another film to open doors for it. Rajamouli’s track record, combined with the curiosity surrounding Mahesh Babu’s collaboration with him, has been enough to take expectations to another level.
Perhaps Ranbir was only trying to appreciate the reach of Indian cinema and the opportunities created by these big projects. However, Telugu audiences feel Varanasi has enough strength and a massive brand of its own. Even without Ramayana, the expectations surrounding Rajamouli’s next would have remained just as high.
