OTT Content Should Undergo Screening: Supreme Court

The streaming of web series and OTT originals has become tough on digital streaming platforms. After the release of Mirzapur and Tandav, multiple cases were filed against the streaming platform Amazon Prime Video and the respective teams associated with making these projects. On Thursday, the Supreme Court expressed displeasure on the streaming of films on web platforms without any prior screening of the content. The Supreme court also expressed concern over the streaming of adult content.

During the hearing of a plea by Amazon Prime Video India head, Aparna Purohit against the Allahabad High Court order, in relation to the controversy around Tandav, the Supreme court made the statement. Aparna Purohit has been accused of the inappropriate depiction of Hindu deities in the Tandav web-series. UP police officials were also hurt by the way of their depiction.

However, Purohit’s advocate informed the court on the latest guidelines released by the Supreme court for streaming platforms. The Supreme court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on Friday.

The central government released guidelines recently to give ratings (certificates) for the projects going on air on OTT platforms and also advised to have a governing body to hear the problems raised by several people in connection with the content.
