Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao created history in the Academy Awards 2021 by becoming the second woman to win an Oscar for Best Direction for her film Nomadland. Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win in this category for the 2009 film The Hurt Locker. Chloé Zhao is also the first Asian woman to win this honor.
Speaking in her acceptance speech, Chloé Zhao said, “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves, and to hold on to the goodness in each other.” This is the third directorial film of this 39-year-old filmmaker.
Chloé Zhao competed with the likes of David Fincher (Mank), Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round), Lee Issac Chung (Minari), and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). Interestingly, it was also an Asian director Bong Jon-Hoo who won the Academy Award last year for his film Parasite. Nomadland features Frances McDormand in the lead role.
