After winning hearts in Karnataka, Su From So now arrives in Telugu theatres. Blending small-town warmth with hilarious moments, this comedy-horror features Shaneel Gautam, J.P. Thuminad, Raj B. Shetty, and Pushparaj Bollar. Directed by debutant J.P. Thuminad with visuals by S. Chandrasekharan and music by Sandeep, it carries glowing word-of-mouth from its Kannada run. The film is being released through Mythri Movie Makers in the Telugu states. Let’s see if the film resonates the same way with the Telugu audience.
Setup:
Su From So is a comedy-horror drama set in the backdrop of coastal Karnataka. Is a ghost actually bothering the residents of the village? You need to watch and find out why people are laughing in a film set against such a serious plotline. The story follows quirky villagers like Ravi Anna (Shaneel Gautam), Ashoka (J.P. Thuminad), Guruji (Raj B. Shetty), Bhaava (Pushparaj Bollar), along with Prakash Thuminad and Deepak Rai in important roles.
Performances:
The film revolves around Shaneel Gautam as the protagonist, delivering a great performance with strong command over his act. J.P. Thuminad plays the other main role with a lot of wit and innocence. Raj B. Shetty is a big add-on to the casting, setting the tone right at places with his presence. Prakash Thuminad and Deepak Rai do well in their parts. Last but not least, Pushparaj Bollar is a complete show-stealer.
Technicalities:
Set in the rural backdrop of coastal Karnataka, Su From So is beautifully captured through DOP S. Chandrasekharan’s lens. The film feels lively throughout. Considering it’s a debut, the writing and direction are nothing less than exceptional. J.P. Thuminad’s skill in the craft is visible in each and every scene. Sandeep does a good job in holding the comic timing at many places with his background score. Editing needs a special mention, as comedies need to be precise with the cut.
Positives:
Hilarious comic timing of actors
Writing
Raj B. Shetty’s presence
Background score
Negatives:
Story goes off track at times
Female Roles Often Overlooked
Analysis:
J.P. Thuminad opens the film with an out-and-out horror scene, setting up the tone of the film. But as we go through, the drama between the villagers is what the film holds for us. In days where memes are being made into movies, JP takes the conventional route and makes an out-and-out situational comedy which has a ton of hilarious moments.
The laughter in every scene, the innocent characterisations, the comic timing, everything keeps adding up to a point. But, to our surprise, this is not all Su From So is about. The film has a sub-layer, the story of a widow, that runs as the core emotion towards the end.
JP shines as a writer in this act of human emotions. Raj B. Shetty deserves special appreciation for backing such an honest story. The women characters towards the end leave a good impact on viewers. The Telugu dialogues are written well, which makes the film rooted for Telugu audiences as well.
If you are looking out for an entertainer to watch out with your family or a comedy to enjoy with your gang, this is your pick.
Bottom line: A sensible situational comedy
