Actor Priyadarshi, who scored his career’s biggest blockbuster earlier this year with Court, had to witness a super flop with his last outing, Mithra Mandali. Now, he returned to theatres with his latest flick, Premante, featuring Anandhi as the lead actress. Directed by Navaneeth Sriram, this comedy-thriller features Suma Kanakala in a pivotal role. It was bankrolled by Jhanvi Narang and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao. The film has hit the theatres today, and here’s the review of it.

What is it about?

Madhusudhan alias Madhi (Priyadarshi) runs a CCTV business. He meets Ramya (Anandhi) at a wedding. Their accidental meeting and the interaction that follows will eventually lead to their wedding. All goes well between the couple for the first three months, until Ramya learns a shocking truth about her husband. What does Ramya do after learning the truth about her husband? How is the Head Constable (Asha Mary) involved in this couple’s tale? How did Madhusudhan and Ramya’s married life take a turn after that revelation? These factors form the main crux of the film.

Performances:

Doing these kinds of lively and comedic roles is a cakewalk for Priyadarshi, and thus, he excels in his part. Anandhi looks good on screen and delivers an impactful performance. She has an interesting character arc in the movie, and she gave her best to the role. Suma gets a full-length comedy role. Though Suma is brilliant in anchoring, her acting feels flat in this movie. The writing of her character was pale, and her performance was also not up to the mark. Other actors like Vennela Kishore and Hyper Aadhi performed within their character limitations.

Technicalities:

Music by Leon James was disappointing. Neither the songs nor the background score creates any impact. The cinematography is decent and brings a good visual tone to the story. The editing feels choppy in the beginning, but has been done well in the latter half. The production values are good. Writing and direction are where the film falters miserably and ends up becoming a boring affair.

Thumbs Up:

Lead actors’ performances
A Few Entertaining Sequences

Thumbs Down:

Poor Writing
Music
Suma’s Track
Soulless Execution
Too Many Cinematic Liberties

Premante is one such film which may have sounded exciting on paper but eventually ended up being a bore fest due to the unexciting screenplay, direction and execution. Right from the word go, the writer and director, Navaneeth’s lack of experience is to be seen with the way, he staged the drama and with the way the proceedings were written and executed. The film was partly engaging during the first hour. But, the things feel flat right after conflict point is revealed. The pre-interval sequence had the potential to work out very well but it failed to create any excitement because of the amateurish direction.

Things get a bit settled in the second half, but the entire drama looks so superficial and was poorly executed. Suma’s subplot failed big time, and it appeared that, Suma, was a miscast to the role. On the whole, Premante suffers from lethargic writing and direction right from the beginning, which makes the film a tiresome watch. Barring a very few entertaining sequences, the film is a major misfire.

Final Verdict: Bore Fest

Rating: 2/5
