Gurram Paapi Reddy Review

Gurram Paapi Reddy is a crime thriller that was promoted aggressively over the last few days. Featuring Naresh Agastya, Faria Abdullah, Jeevan Reddy, and John Vijay in key roles, the film has been directed by Murali Manohar and hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

What is it about?

Gurram Paapireddy (Naresh Agastya) and his gang are on a special mission to replace a dead body at a crematorium in Srinagar Colony. As they set out to do so, a few members of a royal family are after Paapireddy for his property. What is Paapireddy up to? Why does he want to replace a dead body? What’s his mission? Did he accomplish it, and what issues does he face? This forms the basic story of the film.

Performances:

Naresh Agastya comes out of his comfort zone and plays a fun role with ease. Compared to his previous performances, he does well in this film. Faria Abdullah has a solid screen presence and suits her role perfectly. Jeevan is very good in his comedy role. Yogi Babu does not get much to do in the film, and the same is the case with the legendary Brahmanandam. Rajkumar Kasireddy is decent in his role. There is not much the actors can do in terms of performances, as the film is a crime comedy and runs on a predictable thread.

Technicalities:

Krishna Saurabh has composed the music, which is ordinary. However, his background score is decent and keeps things moving. One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the poor editing. Though the film has a crisp runtime, it feels lengthy. There are many unwanted scenes included just for the sake of it, and they should have been edited out. Director Murali Manohar’s screenplay is disappointing. He concentrates only on comedy and ignores the basic emotions of the film. There is no seriousness in the plot, as the film lacks novelty. The dialogues are decent, and the one-liners are quite good. The production values are neat, but the writing is weak, as similar films have been seen many times before.

Gurram Paapi Reddy is directed by Murali Manohar, and going by the trailer, one could understand that the film would be high on comedy and thrills. However, the comedy works only in parts, and the thrills fall flat. There was a lot of scope for the director to add engaging thrills, but he failed to do so. There is absolutely no novelty in the proceedings, and one can easily predict where the film is heading.

Though it starts on a fun note, the director fails to carry the momentum and keep the audience interested. The placement of songs is poor, and they act as speed breakers. There is not a single episode that fully holds attention. The seriousness of the narrative is missing, as everything is treated too lightly. The story appears lifted from several crime thrillers and lacks impact.

The writing is weak, with scenes penned conveniently. The director narrates the film in a way that suits him but fails to impress the audience. Despite having big names like Yogi Babu and Brahmanandam, they are not utilized well. The immature narration is evident in the lack of logic that has been applied in a few scenes in the film. The crime comedy does not hold your attention in crucial times and makes things boring for the audience.

While a few moments generate laughs due to the presence of noted actors, the rest of the film is largely boring. Despite a solid premise, the director fails to capitalize on it, resulting in a disappointing and below-par watch this weekend.
